3. Curriculum - Year 10

Certificate 3 in Christian Studies

The Certificate III in Christian Studies comprises 13 modules that seek to engage students in mature reflection and learning in the four areas of biblical studies, theology, apologetics and discipleship. In the first year of this course students complete the introductory module on the New Testament gospels (NT1B) as well as undertaking an investigation of the themes and background of the text of the book of Acts (NT1C). In addition to this, Year 10 students undertake a unit of theology (CT1A), during which the concepts of revelation and scripture are explored. A module on communication skills (CM1A) is also completed in this year. The Certificate III in Christian Studies is an accredited VET course and counts towards students’ VCE score.

Foundation English (Unit 1)

Although this subject is studied at Year 10, it is a fully accredited VCE subject. This study is designed to enable students to:
• Strengthen and extend their competence and confidence in using Standard Australian English in meeting the demands of further study, the workplace and their own needs and interests;
• Strengthen and extend their language skills through thinking, reading, writing, speaking and listening;
• Communicate ideas and information effectively using the conventions of written and spoken language;
• Speak and listen in a range of informal and formal settings for different purposes;
• Read a range of texts to construct personal, creative, comparative and critical responses;
• Read accurately to locate, extract, understand, organise and synthesise ideas and information;
• Control the conventions of Standard Australian English in order to edit and proofread their writing to enhance accuracy of expression and clarity of meaning;
• acquire a vocabulary to talk precisely about language and texts.
The areas studied in Unit 1 include Essentials of English - Reading, Writing and Speaking; and The Study of Texts

This unit is also a fully accredited VCE English subject and builds on the skills developed in Unit 1. The unit is designed to enable students to:

The areas studied in Unit 2 include Essentials of English- Reading, Writing and Speaking; The Study of Texts; and Information Literacy.

Mathematics

The mathematics course covers a number of key skills in algebra such as manipulation of algebraic expressions and solving basic equations. Algebra is also used in displaying patterns which are linear and quadratic in nature. Other topics include trigonometry, solving simultaneous equations and exploring exponential and logarithmic functions.

Science

Science is all about understanding the world around us. The semester 1 course has a focus on the chemistry and physics areas of science including understanding atoms, chemical bonding, chemical equations and reaction as well as the relationship between electricity and magnetism and the use of waves in the form of electromagnetic waves to transmit information.

In semester 2, students investigate the physics areas of motion and Newtonian forces as well as the biological areas of science including genetics, creation/evolution and anatomy.

Students develop skills in problem solving and the ability to follow instructions as well as improving their knowledge of the areas studied.

Studies of Society and the Environment

Students build on their knowledge of the disciplines of History and Geography, through the study of society.
Topics studied in Year 10 include:
• Australians at War
• The cost of buying a house
• Choosing a career

LOTE - French

Students learned about using reflexive verbs to describe their personal routine. Students learned how to use the Future Tense, and practised speaking about the future by thinking up election promises and creating a model of transport or accommodation from the future to describe in French. Students revised many aspects of the topics they have learned in French so far, by creating and presenting a personal profile as a PowerPoint presentation. Aspects of French society and culture students learned about included ‘Le Tour de France’, the rugby world cup held in France, and visits to our class from French exchange students.

Health & Physical Education

Year 10 students participate in a range of Health and Physical Education units and activities. Physical Education units include Athletics, SEPEP Netball, Tennis, Fitness Testing and Game Sense. Health units include Mental Health Awareness and World Health.

Art/Graphics

The students develop an understanding of various media presentation methods. They look at the history of photography and the use of digital imaging as a way of communicating ideas and concepts. They work co operatively with others to develop solutions and images.

Technology Studies - Information Technology

Year 9&10 Information Technology students study a range of programs and software which will help them to analyse and develop solutions to information problems. Programs and software include Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, the Internet and Website design software. Students will be required to work as individuals and in groups to complete tasks.
