| Christian Living For P-6 Christian Living, we use a curriculum called “On the Way” produced by TNT Ministries. It is a three year syllabus, covering the main Bible stories from Genesis to Acts. Christian Living classes also involve prayer times, scripture memorisation and singing praise and worship songs. Lively discussion takes place and questions about spiritual matters are encouraged. Our aim is to lead the children to faith in Jesus Christ. Our desire is for the children to know that the Bible and the Christian life are relevant to them today. Through fun and focussed activities we aim for each child to form a personal relationship with Jesus Christ that is meaningful, satisfying and lasting. English For English students participate in an exciting program called Bookweb. This covers all aspects of the English program from speaking and listening, reading and writing and strategies including grammar and spelling activities. The program allows students to read from a variety of books, including Christian books that encourage students to learn and apply their reading, comprehension, grammar, spelling and text writing skills. These skills are achieved through reading a range of genres and carefully selected activities that are tailored to suit individual students.
Mathematics Mathematics is based on a new program called GO MATHS. This program aims to prepare numerate individuals who are confident about using mathematics. This is achieved by equipping them with a deep knowledge and understanding of mathematical concepts, and the ability to think, reason and work mathematically. The strands covered include number, patterns and algebra, space and geometry, measurement and data. This is achieved by using class discussion, practice, bookwork, maths games and computer-based programs. Another important component of the mathematics program is EMM (Elementary Maths Mastery). EMM is a daily mental maths program and comprises of 20 different strands. Each of EMM’s strands starts at a base level and moves through its particular field merging and interrelating with the 19 other strands that are being run concurrently. The daily incremental portions learned by the students in each strand are small, and because they are reinforced and built upon in subsequent lessons, they are retained.
Science & Technology During science the students will study the digestive system. They will discover what happens throughout the process of digestion from the mouth through to the intestines. Students will learn about the chemical and physical processes that aid digestion by completing class discussions, and conducting exciting and fun experiments. Students will also explore the concept of sound. They will develop their understanding of what causes sound through experiments and class discussions. Each student will design and develop their own musical instrument based on their knowledge of sound. Studies of Society and the Environment A variety of areas are covered in the Year 5 SOSE course. Students will study the topic of water and will build on their own knowledge of this valuable resource. They will study various aspects including the “Water Cycle”, where our water comes from and goes, and conservation of water. Students will study renewable and non-renewable resources. This will lead into activities where the students discuss reducing, reusing and recycling resources in our daily lives. In SOSE there will also be a focus on the Olympic Games including time spent studying the origins of the Olympics, the modern Olympics and a study of China. Languages other than English God is the author of all languages and every language and culture is important to God (Genesis 11:7-9, Acts 2:6, Rev 5:9, 7:9, 14:6). The purpose of this Primary level French course is to help children enjoy learning languages, creating a positive attitude to language learning for when they reach Secondary level. Students experience learning French through a wide variety of learning activities including songs, games and role plays. Students are introduced to basic vocabulary such as numbers, days of the week and colours. In order to avoid repetition, most topics which students learn during their Primary years are different to those studied at the Secondary level. Topics Year 5 students study include: Term 1: Les numéros (numbers) and 'Chez McDo et l'alimentation' (McDonalds and nutrition). Students learn about healthy and unhealthy food including learning how to read the nutrition content tables on a McDonalds tray sheet from France. They also learn about the phrases to use when ordering food in France. Term 2: 'Les couleurs' (colours) at 'la piscine' (the pool) and 'le cirque' (the circus). Term 3: 'Les jeux olympiques' (the Olympic Games) sports, countries and the colours of their flags. Term 4: Holiday celebrations in France, especially ‘Le Noël’ (Christmas). Health & Physical Education The program encourages students participate in a range of Physical Education units and activities that develop correct techniques for performing a range of motor skill actions with control and purpose including participating in minor games, skittles and netball. Visual Art In Art students are able to participate and develop their skills using a variety of media, including paint, pencils, fabric art, collage, sculpture, wire, papier-mâché and printmaking. Planning, designing and evaluating work are also major components of the Art course. Music/Performing Arts Students experiment with copying, reading and playing different rhythm patterns. They practise singing in small and large groups, in unison and in harmony. They explore the theory of music through the use of “Music Mind Games”, in particular looking at traditional notation. They learn skills on the recorder and explore basic drama skills.
