3. Curriculum - Year 07

Christian Living

The Christian Living program covers an introduction to the history of God’s dealings with His people throughout the Old Testament period. In Semester Two, students continue the story from where we left it at the end of Semester One. Lessons from the Bible are explored and students are encouraged to make connections between the Scriptures and their own lives. One emphasis of the course is to show how God prepared the world to recognise and understand what He was going to do through His messiah.

English

In this subject students are encouraged to develop and expand their knowledge and understanding of a range of texts; and to use that understanding to respond to those texts. They learn how to recognise and construct a range of text types both for school and personal use. Students are encouraged to speak to an audience and to participate in class discussions. They are encouraged to begin to take more responsibility for their learning and become independent learners, able to monitor their own progress.

Mathematics

The units and skills covered this semester have included:
Data - frequency tables, interpreting and constructing column, bar, line & pie graphs;
Fractions - Understanding proper, improper and mixed fractions. Manipulating fractions by simplifying, adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing;
Decimals - Understanding place values, adding, subtracting and multiplying decimals;
Geometry - Looking at types of polygons such as triangles and quadrilaterals, investigating angles and Euler's rule;
Equations - building up equations and backtracking;
Networks - Interpreting maps and using scales and bearings, drawing and investigating networks.

Science

Students look at how they learn using multiple intelligences, and safety in the laboratory with the appropriate identification and use of equipment. They also study Science at work and Biology with the use of microscopes in identifying the main features of cells.

Studies of Society and the Environment

Students are introduced to the disciplines of Geography and Environmental Studies, through the study of endangered species, ecosystems and mapping.
Topics studied in Year 7 include: Ancient civilizations, drought and water, endangered animals and various maps and mapping.

LOTE - French

Students continued to learn about ways to introduce and describe people in French, including nationalities and adjectives/describing words. This culminated in the presentation of a personal profile using PowerPoint presentation. Other topics covered included the numbers 0 to 31, the days of the week and the French names of the months. Aspects of French society and culture students learned about included ‘Le Tour de France’, the rugby world cup held in France, and celebrations in France and French-speaking countries including ‘Le Noël’ (Christmas).

Health & Physical Education

Year 7 students participate in a range of Health and Physical Education units and activities. Physical Education units include Athletics, SEPEP Netball and Swimming. Health units include Interpersonal Skills, Anti Bullying and Dangers of Smoking.

Art

Students are taught skills in exploring and developing ideas and to utilise methods and techniques to refine and produce a varied range of artistic pieces. Students are also taught the value of developing acceptable finishing and presentation skills.

Information Technology

Students study the nature and effects of some information technology developments and the techniques, equipment and processes for efficiently and effectively solving information problems. Problems involve processing different types of data, such as text, numeric, sound and images (moving and still). Students also examine the recent history of some information technology developments.

Music & Drama

Students explore and discuss the art of comedy and improvisation. They use drama skills to perform improvisations and role-plays in pairs and small groups. They explore the theory of music through “Music Mind Games”, in particular dictation and appropriate notation for composition. Students work with voices, instruments and percussion to perform Spirituals, Reggae music and contemporary Christian music.

Technology Studies - Food

Students are introduced to the practical study of food technology by producing simple food items by following a series of processes. The items produced include snacks, cakes, pasta, vegetable and meat dishes.
Students study food content and dietary requirements and are encouraged to make healthy choices.

This unit in Textiles is designed to give students experience in designing, making and decorating 3 carry bags using simple measuring, cutting and sewing skills with a range of tools and fabrics. Students will applique, paint and draw their designs onto their bags.

Technology Studies - Graphics

Students learn that Graphic Communication is a visual language. The aim is to communicate ideas graphically using both technical and non technical means. Students examine a variety of graphic concepts and explore a range of techniques to appreciate different elementary spatial relationships and concepts using different visual styles and methods.

Technology Studies - Wood

Students are introduced to the study of Technology by producing a simple wooden box. They then design and produce a small object powered by a mouse trap. They learn to manipulate material by going through a number of processes.

Technology Studies - Solar Vehicles

Students investigate alternative energy sources and gain an understanding of basic electricity concepts whilst using a hands-on approach. They do this by constructing models, including functioning models of solar vehicles.
