| Christian Living The Christian Living program encourages students to explore the Christian faith through a series of seminars, assignments and group discussions. Time is spent utilising units from the "Youth Alpha" program; engaging students in looking at the life of Jesus in its historical and theological context; taking in a brief introduction to the New Testament; and finally exploring what discipleship means in the twenty-first century.
English In this subject students are encouraged to develop and expand their knowledge and understanding of a range of texts ; and to use that understanding to respond to those texts. They learn how to recognise and construct a range of text types both for school and personal use. Students are encouraged to speak to an audience and to participate in class discussions. They are encouraged to begin to take more responsibility for their learning and become independent learners, able to monitor their own progress.
Mathematics The Mathematics course covers a number of key skills in number, algebra, data and measurement. The units covered this semester have included: Number - order of operations, fractions, decimals, integers and number lines; Measurement - perimeter, circumference and area and Percentages.
Science Science is all about understanding the world around us. This semester students have looked at how they learn using multiple intelligences, and at concepts like elements, compounds, the periodic table and chemical reactions. There has been an emphasis on practical work to assist students to experience the areas being studied. Students have developed skills in problem solving and the ability to follow instructions, as well as improving their knowledge of the areas studied.
Study of Society and the Environment SOSE examines how humans organise themselves into communities and states to form institutions and systems. The study of these societies at a local, national and international level is critical for young people to develop an understanding of their world and its historical development. SOSE also encompasses the study of the natural and built surroundings that provide the physical context for social processes and cultural development. It examines the nature and interdependence of environments and people.
LOTE - French Students learned to speak about clothes, and combined this with the revision of speaking about colours. Students also revised many aspects of the topics they have learned in French so far, by creating and presenting a personal profile as a PowerPoint presentation. They also learned about the weather, culminating in presenting a weather report about a French speaking country. Aspects of French society and culture students learned about included ‘Le Tour de France’ and the rugby world cup held in France.
Health & Physical Education Year 8 students participate in a range of Health and Physical Education units and activities. Physical Education units include Athletics, SEPEP Netball, Minor Games and Fitness Testing. Health units include Dangers of Alcohol and Australian Health.
Art Students are taught skills in exploring and developing ideas and to utilise methods and techniques to refine and produce a varied range of artistic pieces. Students will also be taught the value of developing acceptable finishing and presentation skills. Skills in analysis of art works are developed.
Information Technology Students study the nature and effects of some information technology developments and the techniques, equipment and processes for efficiently and effectively solving information problems. Problems involve processing different types of data, such as text, numeric, sound and images (moving and still). Students also examine the recent history of some information technology developments.
Music & Drama Students explore and discuss the art of comedy and improvisation. They use drama skills to perform improvisations and role-plays in pairs and small groups. They explore the theory of music through “Music Mind Games”, in particular dictation and appropriate notation for composition. Students work with voices, instruments and percussion to perform Spirituals, Reggae music and contemporary Christian music.
Technology Studies - Food Students are introduced to the practical study of food technology by producing simple food items by following a series of processes. The items produced include snacks, cakes, pasta, vegetable and meat dishes. Students study food content and dietary requirements and are encouraged to make healthy choices.
This unit in Textiles is designed to give students experience in designing, making and decorating 3 carry bags using simple measuring, cutting and sewing skills with a range of tools and fabrics. Students will applique, paint and draw their designs onto their bags.
Technology Studies - Graphics Students learn that Graphic Communication is a visual language. The aim is to communicate ideas graphically using both technical and non technical means. Students examine a variety of graphic concepts and explore a range of techniques to appreciate different elementary spatial relationships and concepts using different visual styles and methods.
Technology Studies - Wood Students are introduced to the study of Technology by producing a simple wooden box. They then design and produce a small object powered by a mouse trap. They learn to manipulate material by going through a number of processes. Technology Studies - Solar Vehicles Students investigate alternative energy sources and gain an understanding of basic electricity concepts whilst using a hands-on approach. They do this by constructing models, including functioning models of solar vehicles.
