3. Curriculum - Year 06

Christian Living

For P-6 Christian Living, we use a curriculum called “On the Way” produced by TNT Ministries. It is a three year syllabus, covering the main Bible stories from Genesis to Acts.
Christian Living classes also involve prayer times, scripture memorisation and singing praise and worship songs. Lively discussion takes place and questions about spiritual matters are encouraged.
Our aim is to lead the children to faith in Jesus Christ. Our desire is for the children to know that the Bible and the Christian life are relevant to them today. Through fun and focussed activities we aim for each child to form a personal relationship with Jesus Christ that is meaningful, satisfying and lasting.

English

The English program is structured around the ‘Bookweb’ format, where a new text is employed as the focal point for numerous literacy activities, including reading for understanding, spelling, grammar, text writing and handwriting. These skills are achieved through the reading of a range of genres and carefully selected activities that are tailored to suit individual students.
The program operates on a four-week cycle, with a new text being utilised at the beginning of a new cycle. Various text types are used, covering Christian, secular, fiction and non-fiction genres.

Mathematics

The Mathematics program is based on the Maths Plus for Victoria 6 program and uses the publication of that name as the key textbook in this subject. This is a comprehensive curriculum covering the key strands of number, space and measurement, chance and data. At Yr 6 level we are working towards achieving and extending the standards and outcomes for Level 4. Mathematics learning involves using class discussion, practice and bookwork. The Maths Plus program is supplemented and supported by additional mathematical activities. One of these activities is the explicit teaching program Elementary Math Mastery (EMM). EMM covers all aspects of mathematical learning at this level on a daily basis, providing students with an opportunity to maintain and refresh their skills in all areas of mathematical learning on a regular basis.

Science & Technology

In Semester 1 students investigate the requirements of seeds for germination and explore methods of seed dispersal. They conduct a survey of the seeds present in school grounds.
Students also examine paper products and identify their properties as well as exploring ways of reusing and recycling paper and altering its strength through creating a ‘papier-mâché’ box with a lid as well as a free standing biodegradable pot for a plant.
First semester studies also include the study of food chains, food webs and endangered species with the highlight being the individual study of an endangered animal by each student.

Studies of Society and the Environment

A variety of areas are covered in the Grade 6 SOSE course. Students research and learn about their local council and the services and facilities provided by councils, and governments. Students also look at the history and culture of Austalian aboriginal people. There is also a focus in the olympic games as well as some time spent studying China and some of the history and culture of this very diverse country. Students also complete a unit that investigates basic economics.

Languages other than English

God is the author of all languages and every language and culture is important to God (Genesis 11:7-9, Acts 2:6, Rev 5:9, 7:9, 14:6). The purpose of this Primary level French course is to help children enjoy learning languages, creating a positive attitude to language learning for when they reach Secondary level. Students experience learning French through a wide variety of learning activities including songs, games and role plays. Students are introduced to basic vocabulary such as numbers, days of the week and colours. In order to avoid repetition, most topics which students learn during their Primary years are different to those studied at the Secondary level. Topics Year 6 students study include:

Term 1: Les numéros (numbers) and 'Chez McDo et l'alimentation' (McDonalds and nutrition). Students learn about healthy and unhealthy food including learning how to read the nutrition content tables on a McDonalds tray sheet from France. They also learn about the phrases to use when ordering food in France.

Term 2: 'Les couleurs' (colours) at 'la piscine' (the pool) and 'le cirque' (the circus).

Term 3: 'Les jeux olympiques' (the Olympic Games) sports, countries and the colours of their flags.

Term 4: Holiday celebrations in France, especially ‘Le Noël’ (Christmas).

Health & Physical Education

The program encourages student participation in a range of Physical Education units and activities that develop correct techniques for propelling, controlling, dribbling and receiving an object, including throwing and catching a tennis ball and kicking a ball.

Visual Art

In Art students are able to participate and develop their skills using a variety of media, including paint, pencils, fabric art, collage, sculpture, wire, papier-mâché and printmaking. Planning, designing and evaluating work are also major components of the Art course.

Music/Performing Arts

Students experiment with copying, reading and playing different rhythm patterns. They practise singing in small and large groups, in unison and in harmony. They explore the theory of music through the use of “Music Mind Games”, in particular looking at traditional notation. They learn skills on the recorder and explore basic drama skills.
