| Christian Living The Christian Living program encourages students to explore the Christian faith in the light of different philosophies presented in the media. Students learn to deconstruct different media to analyse their philosophical undergirding, as well as use the drama series “Eric” to explore different life related themes. The emphasis is on students thinking through the implications of differing philosophies in the light of God’s message in the Bible. We round off the year with an introduction to ethics.
English Students in this subject are encouraged to consolidate the ability to study and respond critically to a variety of texts. As they progress as independent learners, they develop further skills in speaking in a range of formal and informal situations and in the appropriate use of language in those situations. Students are encouraged to respond to a variety of text types from classical literature to contemporary multimedia texts in critical and analytical ways. They should also consolidate the ability to write in a range of text types for a variety of purposes and audiences.
Mathematics The Mathematics course covers a number of key skills in number, algebra, geometry and trigonometry. There is an emphasis on students increasing their problem solving abilities. The units covered this semester have included Measurement, Probability and Algebra. During second semester, students will work on Trigonometry, Linear Graphs, Geometry and Statistics.
Science Science is all about understanding the world around us. As part of the Creek program there has been a focus on equiping students with the knowledge and skills to explore the Creek from a scientific perspective. Projects include estabilshing a water testing program, investigating flora and fauna as well as getting an overview of the geology of the area. Students undertake a chemistry unit that focused on materials from an atomic perspective. Energy in the environment and ecosystems as well as the production of electrical energy are also investigated.
Civics and CitizenshipThe Civics and Citizenship program encourages students to engage with and reflect on the rights and responsibilities associated with being a young adult in Australia and consider ways in which people can contribute to the common good. Students assess how majority rule is balanced with respect for minorities in the exercise of democratic power and civic decision making. Students investigate and participate in ways to prevent and counter acts of racism, prejudice and discrimination. They develop skills in making collective decisions and take opportunities for informed civic action on important issues.
LOTE - French Students learned about using reflexive verbs to describe their personal routine. Students learned how to use the Future Tense, and practised speaking about the future by thinking up election promises and creating a model of transport or accommodation from the future to describe in French. Students revised many aspects of the topics they have learned in French so far, by creating and presenting a personal profile as a PowerPoint presentation. Aspects of French society and culture students learned about included ‘Le Tour de France’, the rugby world cup held in France, and visits to our class from French exchange students.
Health & Physical Education Year 9 students participate in a range of Health and Physical Education units and activities. Physical Education units include Athletics, SEPEP Netball, Tennis and Fitness Testing. Health units include Mental Health Awareness and World Health.
Art Students are taught skills in exploring and developing ideas and to utilise methods and techniques to refine and produce a varied range of artistic pieces. Students will also be taught the value of developing acceptable finishing and presentation skills. Students develop skills in analysis of art works.
Music & DramaStudents prepare and present a Christian comedy as Reader's Theatre. They re-examine their existing defintion of music, and develop appropriate individual performance and research goals. They attempt to achieve these. They view and discuss examples of film making where images and music are used to communicate a message without the use of words. They choose a theme and develop their own communication project using images and suitable music.
The Creek Students develop an understanding of Environmental issues by studying the stormwater outflow and the ponds that constitute the Creek. They learn to grow their own vegetables and develop an understanding of the benefits of eating locally produced and seasonal food. Issues range from Global Warming to Local Litter. During their tour of the Western District and the South East of South Australia they study other environments. Technology Studies - GraphicsStudents focused on designing and producing a specific publication within the school community using technical and non technical means of presentation. A strong emphasis is placed on problem solving in the gathering, analysing interoperating information pulling together a snapshot of a community.
Technology Studies - Information Technology Year 9&10 Information Technology students study a range of programs and software which will help them to analyse and develop solutions to information problems. Programs and software include Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, the Internet and Website design software. Students will be required to work as individuals and in groups to complete tasks.
