This week the Certificate II in Fashion Design and Technology students were presented with awards for their participation in this year’s Lara Food & Wine Festival. As part of their course the students designed food inspired fashion for the event, which was attended by over 10,000 visitors.
Libby Bell, Chairperson for the Lara Food & Wine Festival presented the certificates to the students at a celebration party congratulating them on their creativity and skill.
The festival is in its eleventh year and came about as an initiative by the Lara Chamber of Commerce to promote food and wine businesses on the north side of Geelong. Held at historic Pirra Homestead the festival offers produce from the local suppliers, as well as activities for children.
The Gordon TAFE have had students from their hospitality and fashion courses involved in the festival for several years as an opportunity to showcase their class work.
The Certificate II in Fashion Design & Technology students from Geelong and Ballarat took their inspiration from food for their gown designs, with ideas coming from marshmallows, sushi, cookies, donuts, honey, tiramisu, wedding cakes, chocolate and cupcakes!
The two year Certificate II in Applied Fashion Design & Technology course is open to BalCC students and students from Ballarat and surrounding areas, with students from BalCC, Beaufort Secondary College and Ballarat & Clarendon College currently attending.
The Certificate II course is being run by The Gordon TAFE with Fashion teacher Tricia Peart and co-ordinated through the Highlands LLEN Vet Cluster.
The course runs from 1:45-5:30pm every Thursday in the BalCC Trade Training Centres (during school terms) and no prior Textiles experience is required. Enquiries can be directed to BalCC VET Co-ordinator, Sylvia Loader.
