In Term 2 BalCC quietly started the journey to becoming a ResourceSmart school. ResourceSmart Schools is an award-winning Victorian Government program that assists schools to embed sustainability in everything they do. The ResourceSmart Schools program provides practical support to schools to reduce resource use, make cost savings, integrate sustainability into the curriculum and share learnings with the community.
Schools are awarded stars as they work through completion of modules and meeting benchmarks for resource use. Schools receive their first star once their core module is certified by Sustainability Victoria. We are currently working towards our first star. The core module is about setting baseline data, creating a sustainability plan, creating strategies to embed sustainability into the curriculum and planning techniques to communicate our learning with the community.
To assist us with our journey last term we were lucky enough to have Jess Powell working with us. Some of the tasks that BalCC participated in while she was with us were:
• A PD session with teachers about recycling
• Classroom lessons with many of the Primary school classes regarding recycling
• Our Year 9 Horticulture class learning about bin contamination
• Our Year 11 Biology class started a Biodiversity Audit
We are looking forward to applying our new knowledge as the school year continues, but also for National Recycling Week from 11-17 November .
