Primary students celebrated Shrove Pancake Day this week with classroom activities and of course eating pancakes!
Shrove Pancake Day is traditionally a feasting day before the start of Lent on Ash Wednesday. Lent is a period of fasting, with many Christians traditionally giving up luxuries during that period. But how did eating pancakes become a tradition? The tradition comes for using up rich foods, such as eggs and fats, in the house before starting Lent and beginning the fast. These ingredients were the same ones for pancake recipes.
