An exciting co-curricular opportunity is available at Ballarat Christian College. Your child has the opportunity to be involved in the development and construction of human and hybrid powered vehicles as part of the South Star Warriors (SSW) Team. This project aims to give our students the insight, knowledge and skills needed to design, develop, construct and race these vehicles with the intention of promoting the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and alternative transportation options for the future.
Team members will work on the vehicles and train in them at BalCC in the Trade Training Centre from 3:30-5:00pm under the direct supervision of staff every second Tuesday afternoon (even weeks 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10) of each term from 3:30pm to 5:00pm. With the first meeting starting next Tuesday, 19th February.
The main goal of SSW is to build people through the SSW program and we use the vehicles as a way to achieve this. We try to assist team members to make strong friendships and this unique program provides for students from Year 7 through to Year 12.
This project will also give Year 7-12 team members the opportunity to participate in race events throughout the year in a variety of roles, such:
Techies
Team members choosing to train as a Techie (Technician) will learn to safely use hand tools and hand-held power tools. This will be conducted under the direct supervision of experienced staff.
Riders
Riders train as often as possible to get used to riding in the recumbent (lay down) position, operating push-pull steering and learning to ride competitively including overtaking, cornering and coping with various race situations such as collisions, track lines and rules. Riders keep a log of their training time
Years 8-12 team members have the opportunity to be selected to ride the faster and more technical Hybrid and Energy Efficient Vehicles.
Riders are expected to have a bicycle helmet, rider gloves (to be kept in the SSW room), drink bottle and wear safety glasses while riding.
Information Technology
The IT team looks after event preparation such as forms and applications, letters, publicity and promotion and fundraising. They also assist with the running of our fundraising shop which sells food, confectionery and drinks to team members.
Parents are also invited to help with equipment, catering, fundraising, uniforms and sponsorship. If you own a business would you be interested in sponsoring the SSW Team? We will promote your business on the SSW vehicle and team T-shirt, plus the SSW trailer which would be seen by many at the race meets we travel to. There are three levels of sponsorship: Bronze, Silver and Gold.
Bronze level sponsors donate cash / goods to the value of $100
Silver level sponsors donate cash /goods to the value $200
Gold level sponsors donate cash / goods to the value of $300+
If you can help in any of these areas, please contact SSW teachers - Sylvia Loader, Karen Farquhar, Kaylene Templar or call the College Administration Office on 5337 5900.
