Year 12 selected for National Youth Science Forum

Year 12 student Joshua attended the National Youth Science Forum at the University of Queensland during the January school holidays.

The NYSF Year 12 Program is a 12-day residential program designed to give students a broader understanding of the diverse study and career options available in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) and to encourage continued studies in these fields. Participants were able to:

·visit science and technology related laboratories and facilities,

·go on site tours,

·listen to lectures,

·take part in workshops,

·go to social events, and

·participate in group activities that improve communication and presentation skills.

Participants also take part in sessions on entrepreneurship, critical thinking, how to work together effectively, and more. The focus is not solely on academic achievements, but on developing well-rounded individuals who have the skills and confidence to determine their futures.

Joshua is studying English, Chemistry, Further Maths, Math Methods and a Certificate III in Christian Studies (having already completed Biology and Music Performance), and plans to study a Bachelor of Medical Science and a Doctorate of Medicine (BMedSci/MD) then to go on to finish a Masters in Surgery.

“During the Summer School Holidays, I was selected to attend the 2019 National Youth Science Forum (NYSF) at the University of Queensland (UQ). I was selected to attend the program by applying, then being selected by a panel of NYSF Alumni and Rotarians in an interview rotation day.

For 12 days, I was presented with many opportunities to further my personal development, knowledge of the STEM field and career pathways. Being part of the Medicine interest group, I was presented with opportunities to learn about bioengineering, pathology, physics and medical practising. These all strengthened my love for the STEM field, as well as solidified my career choice.

This program was amazing to attend, I met many new friends, and created contacts that will remain with me throughout my future career.

Post NYSF, we are granted the opportunity to attend international events in Heidelberg, London, Singapore and Boston. I myself will be wishing to attend one of these events and broaden my horizons.

I implore any future year 12 students to apply for this program, even if you are not 'academic', it is a program where you meet 200 likeminded and passionate science students, and you will build everlasting bonds. This sentiment is backed up by 3,000 alumni of the program; don't miss a once in a life time opportunity.” Joshua Year 12
