Excursion to Gene Technology Access Centre

The Year 11 Biology students visited the Gene Technology Access Centre at the University of Melbourne last week to complete an investigation in to Advanced Microscopy Techniques.

During the GTAC program the students explored research case studies to generate an understanding of how technologies enhance our knowledge of cell structure and function and how technologies assist with diagnosis and treatment of disease. They utilised a variety of staining techniques to view cell structures using compound and fluorescence microscopes.

Students were also taught an advanced microscopic technique known as triple fluorescence which they used to stain mammalian cells. Triple fluorescence provides a unique and aesthetic insight into the architecture of eukaryotic cells as these stains allow students to view the cell cytoskeleton, mitochondria and DNA.
