This week the Year 8 students attended an Industry Tech Taster Program at the Ballarat Tech School (BTS).

Students experienced and used technology in industry based applications that connect the process of using technology to the impact of the application with a focus on data including what we make and how we measure it. They were involved in workshops on Virtual Reality in Industry, New Energies Industry and Robotics, Programming in the Advanced Manufacturing Industry and Electronics in Creative Industries

The Industry Tech Taster program is an introductory program that can lead in to other learning programs to deepen students understanding and application of technology.

BTS programs are holistic in nature and based on the Department of Education Tech School Learning Program Design Framework fourteen key principles that focus on:

• Engaging and inspiring students in STEM

• Support teaching in schools and the classroom

• Link education and industry

• Remain flexible and suitable to local needs

STEM education is a term used to refer collectively to the teaching of the disciplines within its umbrella – science, technology, engineering and mathematics – and also to a cross-disciplinary approach to teaching that increases student interest in STEM related fields and improves students’ problem solving and critical analysis skills.
