Our Year 9 Alternative Camp Program was a huge success. A small group of Year 9 students were involved in a variety of camp experiences which included setting up and packing up a tent, gathering sticks, and starting a fire in our pizza oven. Cooking each day was an important component of the program, and they enjoyed tasting their food products. Our students’ cooking experiences included cooking marsh mellows over the fire (which was a first for some of our students), baked potatoes in foil, damper, and scones.
Art and craft activities were also a dominant element of our program. Our students spent extensive time weaving, threading, beading and painting. They worked on an extensive project of their choice wildlife animal which they sketched onto canvass with the assistance of a stencil. Their painting techniques focussed on blending, texture and colour to create a representation of their chosen animal. Each student was required to express why they were drawn to representing their wildlife animal. The finished products are wonderful representations of the students’ talent and effort which they have invested this week. Their artwork will be displayed in the foyer of the Learning Enhancement Centre.
Our final day of the program was spent at Sovereign Hill. This experience provided our students with an opportunity to explore hands on activities and presentations including camp life on the diggings, the gold pour, sweet making, bowling, gold panning and candle dipping. They enjoyed their shopping experiences in the Trades, Crafts and Stores, particularly the Candy Store and Drapery Store. Our students were treated to an opulent tea room which was a very unique experience.
We would like to congratulate our students on their effort and enthusiasm throughout this Alternative Camp Program. We are very pleased with the learning and outcomes of our students’ hard work.
