The Year 9 students recently attended a Soil Science: Healthy Soil – Healthy People program at Ballarat Tech School.
The applied program utilised the partner schools’ landscape with students collecting soil samples and analysing them in the Ballarat Tech School Soil Laboratory. The excursion equipped students with the knowledge, skills and test results to be able to recommend appropriate basic soil additives and/or remedial action to begin creating healthy balanced soils.
Students took on the role of field and laboratory soil scientists by collecting, evaluating and testing soil samples. They applied critical thinking skills to develop a soil management plan that can be actioned on returning to their home or school.
BTS programs are holistic in nature and based on the Department of Education Tech School Learning Program Design Framework fourteen key principles that focus on:
• Engaging and inspiring students in STEM
• Support teaching in schools and the classroom
• Link education and industry
• Remain flexible and suitable to local needs
